A journey through time

William Hackett has been a cornerstone in the chain manufacturing industry since its inception in the late 19th century. Our journey, spanning over a century, is a testament to our enduring commitment to quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction.

1892 | Establishing a legacy

In 1892, founder William Hackett, laid the foundation of our company at Cherry Orchard, Cradley Heath, West Midlands - the epicentre of the 19th century chain-making industry in England.

The business initially focused on crafting chains for agricultural uses and became a specialist in the design and build of chain harrows.

During the 1930s, with the business passed down the family line to Daniel Hackett. Production ventured into the realm of general-purpose chains, and for the first time automated chain making machinery was introduced to increase output and efficiency.

These significant upgrades eventually necessitated a relocation to Maypole Fields, Cradley Heath, marking the beginning of a new era under the leadership of young William Hackett, who took over the reins from Daniel.

William Hackett Chain Products continue to operate in Cradley Heath, symbolising our enduring legacy in chain products and chain harrows manufacturing.

1969-1989 | Embracing change

The company continued to flourish at Maypole Fields until 1969, when we diversified our operations to include farm equipment production. Fast forward to 1988, when a new chapter began with Brett Hackett assuming the role of Managing Director. The following year saw the establishment of a new lifting division in Alnwick, Northumberland, by Tim and Andrew Burgess, further expanding our horizons. Our global outreach was bolstered in 1990 when we partnered with McKinnon Chain in South Africa.

1995-2010 | Lifting on the rise

By 1995, we had ventured into manufacturing and supplying hoisting products, marking a significant milestone in our growth trajectory.

This new venture led to a partnership to supply Grade 8 lifting equipment.

Our relentless pursuit of excellence continued, and by 2010, we had commenced the supply of Grade 10 Products.

2013-2022 | Acquisitions and advancements

The year 2013 saw further expansion with the acquisitions of Parmiter Harrows and Bradney Chains. Our commitment to innovation was underscored in 2017 with the installation of an automated robot at McKinnon Chain and the development of Quad Pawl technology - the safest hoist technology in the world.

This is the year we also introduced the UK's largest dynamic hoist testing machine. This allowed us to operationally proof load test 50 tonne hoists, reaffirming our position as an industry “heavyweight”. Today, our factory in Alnwick, Northumberland, stands twice its original size, sprawling over 40,000 square feet.

2023-present | New investment

In December 2023, H2 Equity Partners saw the potential in William Hackett and invested in the business, alongside existing shareholders, to help realise the business' ambitious growth strategy.

This included the launch of new and expanded ranges of William Hackett lifting equipment during 2024, including chain sling components - Hack8 and Hack10, HA Load Attachments, and William Hackett hardware.

During this year, William Hackett completed the purchase of two complementary businesses - Forge Lifting Gear and B&S Chains, moving into the Maypole Fields site, bringing new products and capabilities.
