Quad Pawl (QP) Technology is a patented safety innovation engineered for manual chain hoists and lever hoists. Developed to enhance safety, durability, and operational performance, it introduces a step change in the reliability of manual lifting equipment used in demanding environments—onshore, offshore, and subsea.
Unlike conventional hoists that use twin pawl mechanisms, QP hoists incorporate four independent pawls, designed to engage sequentially with the ratchet gear. This delivers increased resilience to failure, finer load control, and a higher level of fail-safe operation.
In a manual hoist, pawls are small but critical components that engage with a ratchet gear to control the load. If a pawl fails to engage, the load can slip - posing serious safety risks.
Quad Pawl Technology addresses this by:
Additionally, the pawl springs are enclosed within the brake chamber, protecting them from dirt, moisture, and corrosion, thereby increasing reliability in harsh or subsea environments.

Quad Pawl-equipped hoists are available in SS-L5 QP Lever Hoists, WH C4 QP,
SS-C4 QP, and SS-C4 QP Ultra Low Headroom Chain Hoists as well as
SS-C4 QP ROV Chain Hoists for subsea remote operation.
These hoists meet or exceed global lifting standards:
| Chain Hoists | Lever Hoists |
| BS EN13157: 2004 + AI:2009 | BS EN13157: 2004 + AI:2009 |
| ASME B30.16-2014 | ASME B30.21-2014 |

Lifting operations are among the most safety-critical activities in heavy industry. The Quad Pawl system represents a major step forward in protecting personnel, equipment, and payloads by delivering the highest level of fail-safe assurance available in manual hoisting equipment.
